Oceano Dunes State Park is a hidden gem for surfers, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cold-water waves. If you’re wondering, "Can you surf Oceano Dunes?" the answer is a resounding yes! But you might not want to, there are “easier” waves to be had. The person who chooses Oceano, CA enjoys cold water and strong currents. The same person can be allergic to crowded waves IE Malibu.  


Why Surf Oceano Dunes?


Oceano Dunes, located along the central coast of California, is famous for its expansive sandy beaches and scenic dunes. Surfing here offers a distinctive experience due to the park's unique topography and relatively uncrowded waves.

  • Less Crowded: Compared to more famous spots, Oceano Dunes offers a more relaxed and less crowded environment.

Tips for Surfing Oceano Dunes


Early Bird Gets the Wave: Arrive early to enjoy the best conditions and avoid the afternoon onshore winds.


Look for hints on the beach for the sand bars may have shifted. Be mindful of the tides if driving on the beach and listen to all warnings posted at the ranger station.


Respect the Environment: Oceano Dunes is a protected area. Respect the local wildlife and environment by not leaving any trash behind. Be kind to the locals, every year they deal with more and more ding-a-lings making a mess, Pack it in and pack it out. There is miles and miles of beach here, you don't have to paddle directly out into a group.
